Plastic is one of the most useful materials ever invented, but it creates a serious problem when it is thrown away. Over many years, sunlight and waves slowly break large pieces of plastic into tiny bits called "microplastics." These pieces are smaller than a grain of rice, and some are far too small to see with our eyes. Because they are so tiny and so light, microplastics are now found almost everywhere ( 1 ) — in the ocean, in the soil, and even in the air we breathe every day.
Scientists are worried about where all these tiny pieces finally end up. Fish and other sea animals often swallow microplastics by mistake, believing that they are food. ( 2 ), the plastic can move up the food chain and reach the meals on our own tables. Researchers have even discovered microplastics in bottled water and in falling rain. Although we do not yet fully understand how this affects human health, many experts believe that it is wise to be careful.
The good news is that there are ways to make the problem smaller. People can use less single-use plastic, such as bottles and bags, and choose clothes made from natural materials rather than artificial ones. Some companies are now designing special filters that catch tiny plastic pieces before they reach the rivers. ( 3 ) these efforts, the amount of plastic entering the environment can slowly be reduced. Small daily choices, made by millions of people, can add up to a real difference.
