Seaweed Farming

When people think about farming, they usually picture fields of rice, wheat, or vegetables growing on land. But some of the world's most promising farms are not on land at all — they are in the sea. Around the world, more and more farmers are growing seaweed, a simple plant-like living thing that has been eaten in Asia for centuries. Today, seaweed is attracting attention as a food that may be （ 1 ） for both people and the planet.

Seaweed has many advantages over crops grown on land. It does not need any soil, fresh water, or chemical fertilizer; it simply grows in seawater using the energy of sunlight. Because of this, seaweed farms do not take up valuable farmland that could be used for other crops. （ 2 ）, as seaweed grows, it takes in carbon dioxide, a gas that adds to climate change. In this way, seaweed farms can actually help to clean the water and air around them.

Seaweed can also be used in surprising ways. Scientists are even studying whether adding a little seaweed to the food of cows can make the animals healthier. For all these reasons, many people believe that seaweed farming has a very bright future. Because it cleans the water as it grows, seaweed is one of the few foods that can actually improve the place where it is produced. Early studies even suggest that it could help reduce the harmful gases that farm animals give off.
