Of the roughly seven thousand languages spoken in the world today, experts predict that nearly half may disappear before the end of this century. Languages die when their last fluent speakers pass away without having taught the language to a new generation. This often happens when a small community comes under pressure from a larger, more powerful one. Parents may reluctantly conclude that their children will only succeed in school and work if they speak the dominant language instead of their own, and so the older tongue is gradually left behind.
At first glance, the loss of a little-known language may seem unimportant, or even convenient. If everyone spoke the same few languages, surely communication would be easier. Yet linguists argue that each language carries knowledge that exists nowhere else. Many contain remarkably detailed information about local plants, animals, and weather, gathered and refined over countless generations. A language may also hold stories, songs, jokes, and ways of describing the world that cannot be fully translated into any other tongue. When a language vanishes, that unique store of human experience vanishes with it, often without anyone noticing.
Aware of these losses, communities around the world are working hard to keep endangered languages alive. Some carefully record their remaining elders speaking, while others run schools where young children are taught entirely in the threatened language. Technology can help, too, through dictionaries, smartphone apps, and online lessons that reach learners far away. Reviving a language is difficult and slow, and not every effort succeeds. Still, supporters point out that even partial success can strengthen a community's pride and sense of identity, reminding its members of who they are and where they come from.
