For hundreds of years, people have changed the rivers around them. To prevent floods and to make travel easier, they made rivers straighter, built high walls along the banks, and removed rocks and fallen trees. These changes were useful in many ways, but they also harmed the plants and animals that lived in and around the water. Now, in many countries, people are trying to do the opposite and let rivers become ( 1 ) once again.
This idea is sometimes called "rewilding." Instead of forcing a river to flow in a straight line, workers allow it to bend and curve as it did long ago. They put rocks, plants, and even old fallen trees back into the water. ( 2 ) this may look messy at first, it creates many different places where fish, insects, and birds can live. Slower, curving rivers also hold more water during heavy rain, which can actually reduce flooding further downstream.
The results of rewilding can be surprising. In some rivers, fish that had disappeared for many years have returned, and with them have come the birds and animals that feed on them. ( 3 ), rewilded rivers give people beautiful natural places to walk and relax. Although it takes time and careful planning, many experts now believe that giving rivers back their natural shape is good for both nature and people. In some places, local children even help by planting young trees along the banks. As these trees grow, they shade the water and provide homes for yet more living things, and the number of rewilding projects continues to rise each year.
