As the world struggles to move away from fossil fuels, batteries have become more important than ever before. They power electric cars and store electricity generated from sources such as wind and sun, which do not produce energy steadily at all times of day. Yet today's most common batteries still have a number of serious drawbacks, and many researchers are convinced that much better batteries will be absolutely ( 1 ) if clean energy is ever to fully succeed.
One major problem is the materials themselves. The batteries used in most modern devices rely on metals that are expensive, difficult to obtain, and sometimes mined under harmful and dangerous conditions. Such batteries can also catch fire if they are badly damaged or poorly made. ( 2 ) these serious limitations, scientists all around the world are now racing to develop entirely new designs that use cheaper, safer, and far more common materials than those in use today.
Real progress is being made, but turning a promising idea in the laboratory into a reliable product that can be manufactured by the millions is rarely simple or quick. ( 3 ), researchers strongly stress the importance of recycling. Because the valuable materials locked inside old batteries are both useful and strictly limited in supply, recovering and reusing them could reduce both costs and environmental harm at once. The future of clean energy, many now argue, may depend just as much on what we do with our old batteries as on the new ones we manage to invent.
