For centuries, wetlands—marshes, swamps, and bogs—were widely regarded as useless and unhealthy places, fit only to be drained and turned into farmland or building sites. All around the world, vast areas of wetland were destroyed in exactly this way, with little thought for what was being lost. In recent decades, however, scientists have come to understand that these soggy, muddy landscapes are in fact among the most ( 1 ) ecosystems anywhere on earth, and public attitudes have slowly begun to change as a result.
Wetlands quietly provide a remarkable range of services. They act rather like giant natural sponges, soaking up heavy rain and then releasing it slowly, which helps to prevent dangerous floods further downstream. They filter pollutants out of water, leaving it noticeably cleaner. They store large amounts of carbon, helping to slow climate change, and they provide a home for an extraordinary variety of plants and animals. ( 2 ) their unattractive, muddy appearance, in other words, wetlands are constantly doing essential and valuable work.
Recognizing this value at last, governments and conservation groups are now actively working to restore wetlands that were lost. Sometimes this means breaking down old drainage systems and allowing water to flow back in; sometimes it involves carefully replanting native species. Restoration can be slow and is not always simple, since land that was once drained may have been built upon or farmed for many generations. ( 3 ), supporters argue that bringing wetlands back is one of the most cost-effective ways available to protect both people and nature at the same time.
