Tourism is one of the world's largest industries, bringing money and jobs to countless communities around the globe. For many cities and regions, visitors are quite simply a vital source of income, supporting hotels, restaurants, and shops. Yet in recent years, some of the most popular destinations have begun to feel that they are suffering from too much of a good thing. The problem has even been given a name of its own: "overtourism," which describes what happens when a place attracts far more visitors than it can comfortably ( 1 ).
The costs of overtourism are felt mainly by local residents rather than by the visitors themselves. Streets and public transport become unpleasantly crowded, and the noise and litter left behind by tourists disturb ordinary daily life. As property owners convert homes into short-term rentals for tourists, rents rise sharply, and local people may be forced to move away from the neighborhoods where they grew up. Even famous natural sites can be damaged by the sheer number of feet passing through them each day. ( 2 ), a place that depends heavily on tourism can find that tourism is slowly driving away the very residents who give it life.
Faced with these growing problems, some destinations are at last taking action. A few have limited the number of visitors allowed in each day, while others charge special fees designed to reduce crowds or to pay for necessary repairs. Encouraging tourists to visit less famous areas, or to come outside the busiest season, can also help to spread the pressure more evenly across the year. ( 3 ) discouraging tourism altogether, such measures generally aim to make it more sustainable, carefully balancing the needs of visitors against those of the people who actually live there.
