When we watch a video, listen to music, or scroll through the news online, the choices placed in front of us are very rarely accidental. Behind the screen, computer programs known as algorithms quietly decide what to show us, based largely on what we and millions of other people have clicked on before. Their goal, in most cases, is simply to keep us watching, reading, or scrolling for as long as possible. In this quiet way, algorithms have gradually become surprisingly powerful ( 1 ) of modern culture.
This hidden influence has real and important consequences. Because algorithms tend to promote content that is already attracting plenty of attention, a small number of songs, videos, or stories can become enormously popular very quickly, while countless others are almost never seen at all. The same systems may also show people more and more of what they already appear to like, gradually narrowing the range of ideas and opinions they ever encounter. ( 2 ), some critics worry that algorithms can trap individual users inside a comfortable "bubble" of familiar opinions and tastes.
Defenders of the technology are quick to point out that algorithms also help people to discover wonderful things they would never have found entirely on their own, from new artists to genuinely useful information. The real problem, they argue, is not the technology itself but how it is used and, above all, who controls it. ( 3 ) simply accepting whatever happens to appear on the screen, experts increasingly urge ordinary users to understand that their choices are quietly being guided, and to make a deliberate effort to seek out a wider range of sources.
