Many of the foods that we most enjoy, from sweet fruits to crunchy nuts, depend on a quiet and largely unnoticed service performed by insects. As bees and other small creatures move busily from flower to flower in search of food, they carry pollen that allows the plants to produce seeds and fruit. This vital process, known as pollination, is essential not only to wild plants but also to a very large share of the crops that feed the world. Without these hardworking insects, our daily diets would be far more ( 1 ) than they are today.
In recent years, however, scientists have recorded worrying declines in many insect populations. The causes appear to be several, and they often combine and reinforce one another. The widespread use of certain pesticides can harm or kill helpful insects along with the pests they are meant to target. The steady loss of wild meadows and hedgerows removes the flowers and the nesting sites that insects need to survive. Disease and a rapidly changing climate add still further pressure. ( 2 ), no single cause on its own explains the overall decline, which makes the problem considerably harder to address.
The good news is that ordinary people really can help. Planting a variety of flowers that bloom at different times of the year provides insects with food right across the seasons, and leaving some corners of a garden a little wild gives them safe places to live. Reducing the use of chemicals makes any garden noticeably safer for them. Farmers, too, can set aside narrow strips of flowering plants along the edges of their fields. ( 3 ) small actions like these are repeated by very many people, they can together make a real and lasting difference to the insects on which so much ultimately depends.
